We are an all-hazards professional fire department serving the City of Syracuse, a city of approximately 140,000 people. Syracuse Firefighters protect 26 square miles of the City via ten Stations. Our department staffs 9 Engine Companies, 4 Truck Companies, 1 ladder Company, 1 Squad Company, and 1 Heavy Rescue Company. In addition, we also have a highly trained technical rescue team, a level one Hazardous Materials Response Team that covers Onondaga County and has the capability to respond to anywhere in a three contiguous county area, and two marine units capable of responding to emergencies on the waterways of Syracuse.
The vast majority of the 368 members of the department are trained to the NYS EMT-B level for emergency medical response. All members are trained to at least the level of first responder, and we have a large contingent of members trained to the level of NYS Paramedic.
In addition to fire suppression, we also provide first-response emergency medical services and staff an ALS ambulance, which is capable of responding anywhere in the county, and transporting to any of the five hospitals in the county.
We also have a robust Fire Prevention Bureau that works with code enforcement and compliance, permitting, public education, and public outreach.
